American higher education has been the subject of a sustained narrative of institutional crisis for nearly a decade. It has also obscured the institution-by-institution adaptation work that has been, in aggregate, more productive than the broader narrative would suggest.

The substantive work is concentrated at the regional comprehensive universities and at the most disciplined small private liberal arts colleges. The most-discussed elite institutions have less to adapt to and less institutional incentive to adapt; the more pressed institutions have, in many cases, been doing more interesting work than the elite-institution conversation captures.

The political backdrop has been the part of the picture that has produced the sharpest distractions from the substantive work. Public conversations about higher education have, with notable consistency, focused on the elite institutions whose actual operational realities are the least representative of the broader sector.

The honest read is that higher education in America is doing more constructive work than the surrounding narrative reflects, that the work is unevenly distributed across institutions, and that the institutions doing the most substantive work are the ones the public conversation pays the least attention to.
